This year, LGBTQ+ History Month highlights the theme ‘Activism and Social Change’, celebrating the transformative power of collective action in advancing equality and human rights.ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) emerged in the late 1980s as a grassroots organisation fighting the AIDS crisis. Through bold and impactful direct action, ACT UP chapters worldwide demanded urgent government responses, pushed for equitable access to treatment, and championed the rights and visibility of people living with HIV/AIDS.
This event offers a unique opportunity to join a fireside conversation with two former UK members of ACT UP. Rob Archer was originally involved in ACT UP (New York) before co-founding ACT UP (London), and later continued his efforts in Edinburgh. Kenny Lieske, a co-founder of ACT UP in Edinburgh, was among the first AIDS activists in the UK to face arrest for his advocacy.
Together, Rob and Kenny will share personal photographs, artefacts and memories, reflecting on life before the AIDS crisis, their experiences as activists, and their respective journeys afterwards.
A Q&A session will follow, inviting participants to engage with their stories and insights
