The Health & Wellbeing subgroup aims to promote equal health and wellbeing for LGBT people here in York.

The York LGBT Forum offers some support and social groups, as well as, Yorkshire MESMAC and other organisations. Please find below the current groups. The Health & Wellbeing subgroup represents all the communities of identities and would like to communicate with all people within LGBT+ umbrella.

Support and Social

LGBTQ+ Community Choir

The LGBTQ+ Community Choir starts on the 11th July! at Music Block, Room 107, York St John University,  YO31 7EX and will be fortnightly starting at 6:30pm.

Peer Support Mental Health Group (Partnership)
Join us as we talk about mental health and learn new skills to help manage thoughts and feelings.
1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month 4pm – 6pm at
Spark Community Room

Coffee Socials

We have various coffee socials drop in, 1st Saturday (10am – Midday) and 3rd Thursday (6pm – 8pm)  of the month at Yorkshire MESMAC Offices, Marygate Lane, York, YO30 7BJ for anyone who identifies and/or supports the LGBT community.

Yorkshire MESMAC (Parnership)

Our friends Yorkshire MESMAC offers STI testing and other support in York

Our Testing Times Sessions are:

  • Every Monday, 4pm-7pm (except when it is a Bank Holiday Monday).
  • Every Wednesday, 12pm-2pm.
  • The second Saturday of the month, 10am-12pm.

They run as a drop-in services at our York office, The Workshop, Marygate Lane (off Marygate), York, YO30 7BJ.

We also run the following drop-in sessions at the local universities:

  • University of York, every Tuesday (during term time), 12pm-2pm, G/045B, Maths Dept, Heslington, York, YO10 5DD.
  • York St John University, every second and fourth Thursday of the month, 12pm-2pm, Students’ Union, Lord Mayor’s Walk, York, YO31 7EX.

All of our Testing Times sessions offer free, rapid HIV tests with results back in 20 minutes and home testing kits (where you take your own samples, send them off in the post and then you’ll get test results back for HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia).

Trams – York Trans* Youth Group

For 14-25 yrs old people who are transgender, genderqueer, non-binary, intersex etc. or questioning.

Queer Women’s Group
Location: York and North Yorkshire
Gender: Female, Trans Woman, Non-binary, Other
Age Range: Over 18
A peer support and social group based in York offering a safe space to discuss issues to do with mental health, sexuality, and to meet other queer women. This is a Trans* inclusive space. Age 18+. The group is run by a MESMAC employee and someone who works in mental health. We want to form a diverse group, and feel it will become this, with the facilitators being pansexual and non-binary romantic grey-asexual. We are hoping the group will grow and we will be able to do activities and socials outside of our peer support group.
We meet fortnightly on a Thursday from 6pm-8pm at the York MESMAC office, The Workshop, Marygate Lane (off Marygate), York, YO30 7BJ.

What the health and wellbeing subgroup does additionally 

As well as running groups we also have:

Raised LGBT health and wellbeing issues with health and social care providers in York especially with regard to mental health and we now have a peer support mental health group.

Represented LGBT people at various health and wellbeing boards.

We will be reviewing LGBT Sexual Health in 2017 with our partners Yorkshire MESMAC and the Sexual Health Clinic.

Included the Health and Wellbeing subgroup strategy is in the wider York LGBT Forum strategy 2017-2020

Contributed to York’s joint strategic needs assessment which is in review.
