The York LGBT Forum continues to grow and has many groups, activities and events to look forward to including a musical extravaganza at the Barbican on the 8th July. The Queen of Ireland
January 31st 2018
9pm – Late
City Screen
13 – 17 Coney Street York
Tickets available from here: https://www.ourscreen.com/screening/45354
This event is co-organised by the York Irish Association and York LGBT History Month.
The Queen of Ireland is the incredible story of Pandora ‘Panti’ Bliss and her creator, Rory O’Neill. Part glamorous aunt, part Jessica Rabbit, Panti is an accidental activist and, in her own words, ‘a court jester, whose role is to say the unsayable’.
Directed by Conor Horgan (One Hundred Mornings, Deep End Dance) and produced by Blinder Films (The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology, One Hundred Mornings), the film follows Rory and Panti on their journey from a small town in Mayo to national figureheads for equality, and all the way to global spokespersons for LGBT rights.
Funny, powerful and timely, The Queen of Ireland is “part personal documentary, part social history… an entertaining and powerful noble call for that icon and iconoclast of 21st Century Ireland, Rory O’Neill” (RTE Guide).
Tickets are £11 and are available to purchase via https://www.ourscreen.com/screening/45354
This screening has been confirmed as the necessary minimum tickets have been reserved.
The last date for ticket purchases will be 30th January 2018.

Drug and Alcohol Help

Please find a link to lots information about addiction in the LGBT Community. https://www.drugrehab.com/guides/lgbtq/ (note this is american but gives good advice).

Substance use disorders have a greater effect on LGBTQ+ people than on the heterosexual population. The LGBTQ+ community must overcome several obstacles, including being denied substance abuse treatment because of their sexual identity. However, through the proper understanding and accommodation of LGBTQ+ care principles, substance abuse treatment can be successful.

Our Drug and Alcohol dependency support in York  are Changing Lives.

Image result for changing lives york

Our dedicated addiction and recovery services offer a number of tailor-made solutions for people who are living with addiction and recovery. We work with adults who are thinking about abstinence from drugs, alcohol, or substitute medications, and those who are taking active steps towards it.

Changing Lives offers a number of dedicated addiction and recovery services across the North East, York and North Yorkshire. We don’t provide clinical treatment (such as detox programmes), but we can help you contact other agencies that do.

Our recovery services can help:

  • Anyone over 18 years old
  • People at any stage of their recovery journey who are considering their options
  • Women and their children, living in Newcastle and Gateshead, who want to remain together as a family

Print

Our 12-week abstinence-based programmes provide structured, day treatment support for people moving on from addiction. These programmes follow the principles of the international 12 step approach to recovery, and include one-to-one counselling, group therapy, meetings and workshops. Our 12-step programmes currently run across Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, and York.

Print

Changing Lives also provide a range of day centres where people in recovery, or considering their options, can meet others, and get on-going support. Volunteers in recovery themselves play a vital role in the running of these services, as well as others in their journey. These services also offer remote support such as our telephone recovery service and text message support service, and peer and family support.

accommodation-short-version

In recognition of the specific needs of women and children, Changing Lives offers a specialist accommodation project for mothers at various stages of addiction, helping them maintain or rebuild relationships with their children. We focus on recovery-orientated activities, building family links and eventual movement towards independent living in recovery from addiction. We can support women from an initial child protection conference onwards, and before and after detox, providing their aim is to keep or rebuild a relationship with their children.

For the first time in years I had structure and routine and I was shown the skills I could use to change and re-build my life. I met many wonderful people, from the staff to the clients, people like me who had similar experiences and problems. With their help and determination I started to find myself and learn the skills to live my life without alcohol.

Film at City Screen: Call Me By Your Name
Director: Luca Guadagnino.
Starring: Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg. Italy/France/Brazil/USA 2017. 132 mins. English and Italian/French with English subtitles.

Nominated for best feature at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, Luca Guadagnino’s latest film is a sublime, sun-kissed romance based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. During the shimmering summer of 1983, precocious Italian-American teenager Elio (a revelatory Chalamet) spends his days at his family’s 17th-century Lombardy villa studying music and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel). When the much older Oliver (Hammer) arrives to study with his historian father (Stuhlbarg), however, Elio’s romantic ambitions develop in a very different direction. Reining in the ostentatious style that characterised his earlier work, Guadagnino (I Am LoveA Bigger Splash) immerses the viewer in the stunning, seductive setting of the Italian Riviera, and allows Call Me By Your Name to flourish as an evocation of the universal joys and pains of first love.

Join us for this years Transgender Day Of Remembrance on Monday 20th November.
Everey year we remember those who have been unlawfully killed, and those who are no longer with us.
Every 3 days a transgender person is murdered somewhere in the world, most of those needless deaths are down to gender identity.

We are meeting for a drink first at Thomas Of York pub, at 7pm.
Feel free to join us there, or meet up with us outside the Minster near Duncombe place for speeches and a candle lit vigil.

Afterwards we will be returning to Thomas Of York pub for drinks, and Karaoke for those wishing to lift the sombre mood with some singing.

If you’d like to say a few words before the candle lit vigil, please let us know beforehand so that we can arrange the speakers in an orderly manner.

Saturday 25th November – Say Owt (spoken word and poetry) 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM: The Basement, 13 – 17 Coney Street, York, YO1 9QL

Say Owt kicked off in 2014 with a sizzling slam. Our first ever guest was Rogue Teacher Mark Grist, so we thought we’d bring him back for 2017 to once again prove why The Guardian called him “Britain’s Eminem.”

In a Slam, each poet gets 3 minutes for the chance to win a cash prize and become a Say Owt Champion, as judged by the audience. It’s fast and frantic and fun. Fancy a slot? Email info@sayowt.co.uk or visit our websitewww.sayowt.co.uk.

Mark went viral in 2012 when he beat a teenager in a rap battle. But long before this, Mark had quit his job as an English teacher to pursue performance poetry. Mark is a dedicated educator, his writing accessible and fun but also not afraid to tackle important subjects. He’s featured in numerous Don’t Flop rap battles. His commissions have included work for The Royal Institute, BBC Radio 1, Radio 1 Xtra, Channel 4, Film 4, Red Bull, The National Maritime Museum and Google.

Mark will be joined by loveable chum Tim Clare, one of the funniest and most frantic poets in the world. Tim’s stand-up poetry is a raw mixture of manic energy, surreal imagery and wonderous world-play.

Mark will also be leading a writing workshop 26th November at York Explore Library, 1-3pm.

Say Owt is supported by Arts Council England

Mental Health Blog 1

Welcome to what we hope will be a regular monthly blog about Mental Health in York. Each month we will be looking at a different subject area. It is hoped that this blog will help to increase the knowledge of what different types of therapy are available.

The York LGBT Forum helps to manage two mental health groups
York Mind LGBT Group and York Mental Health Peer-Support Group

This month we will be talking about Person-Centred Therapy (PCT)
Some key notes for PCT

  • It is based on the client-therapist relationship
  • The client is at the centre
  • It is non-directive meaning the counsellor will not ask direct yes and no questions but will use terms such as how, what, where and uses your own words to reflect back?
  • It is based on feelings and emotions
  • There are 6 key aspects to developing the client – therapist relationship but most will condense this to 3 also known as the core conditions, Unconditional Positive Regard, Congruence and Empathy.
  • PCT therapist believe that human beings have an actualising tendency. An important part of this theory is that in a particular psychological environment, the fulfilment of personal potentials includes sociability, the need to be with other human beings and a desire to know and be known by other people. It also includes being open to experience, being trusting and trustworthy, being curious about the world, being creative and compassionate.
  • PCT research has shown it is equally as effective treatment for depression and anxiety as other therapies
  • The most famous example of this therapy in action is with Gloria and Carl Rogers
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24d-FEptYj8
  • PCT tends to be a long term therapy 1 year – 2 years
  • PCT is becoming more available in the NHS
  • Lots of charity based counsellors use this method
  • It is the basis of most social work, nursing and therapist training
  • They emphasis that it is the relationship is essential for healing
  • If you go private we advise you would seek a therapist registered with The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)  or a therapist who has practised for 5 years or more
  • PCT was developed by Carl Rogers and has been developed by Mearns and Thorne in recent times
  • They do not focus on your problems and come up with strategies. They stay in the here and now and believe that people have a natural instinct towards growth
  • This type of therapy needs someone who is psychological contact, what they mean by this is that you are present enough to know what is happening.

LGBTQIA+ and Person-Centred Therapy (PCT)

There are limited articles on LGBTQIA+ and Person-Centred Therapy this is not surprising as it is only recently that PCT started to do research, however, this article is an interesting read
