In celebration, resistance and acknowledgement of World AIDS Day, we are doing a fundraiser for Yorkshire Mesmac (www.mesmac.co.uk) and North Yorkshire Aids Action (nyaa.org.uk).

For the event, we shall be screening two episodes of the documentary series America in Transition. After the screening we will have a Q&A with special guest André Pérez, Director of America in Transition.

It is a pay as you feel event.

America in Transition (AIT) is a documentary series and community engagement campaign that explores community, family, and social issues for trans people of color across the United States.

Episodes featured at this event:

LEARNING TO RECOGNIZE MYSELF AGAIN
Arkansas: The threat of violence is an everyday experience for trans people. When Tiommi Luckett’s worst fears come true, she struggles to reconnect with the bold, adventurous woman she’s always been against a backdrop of self-imposed isolation. Episode addresses HIV criminalization, sexual violence, and healing from trauma.

CALLED TO SERVE
North Carolina: After his family and church rejected him, Z becomes the marine he always wanted to be. His life is upended when he’s kicked out under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and he becomes an unlikely activist. Join Z as he searches for love and belonging amidst rising political tensions. Episode addresses civil rights, faith, and LGBTQ history.

Special Guest André Pérez, Director of America in Transition:
André is a mixed race oral historian, educator, filmmaker, and community organizer. Since 2015, André’s been working on America in Transition, a documentary web series and community engagement campaign looking at social justice from the perspective of trans people from marginalized communities.

Film at City Screen: Call Me By Your Name
Director: Luca Guadagnino.
Starring: Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg. Italy/France/Brazil/USA 2017. 132 mins. English and Italian/French with English subtitles.

Nominated for best feature at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, Luca Guadagnino’s latest film is a sublime, sun-kissed romance based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. During the shimmering summer of 1983, precocious Italian-American teenager Elio (a revelatory Chalamet) spends his days at his family’s 17th-century Lombardy villa studying music and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel). When the much older Oliver (Hammer) arrives to study with his historian father (Stuhlbarg), however, Elio’s romantic ambitions develop in a very different direction. Reining in the ostentatious style that characterised his earlier work, Guadagnino (I Am LoveA Bigger Splash) immerses the viewer in the stunning, seductive setting of the Italian Riviera, and allows Call Me By Your Name to flourish as an evocation of the universal joys and pains of first love.
